Campolide is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Lisbon, belonging to the Central Zone of the capital, with 2.77 km² of area, once a good land of cultivation, where there were several farms.
Across the hillside there were olive groves, orchards and vineyards. Currently these hills ‘hide’ a quiet and safe neighborhood, with houses mostly from the 70s. Almost the whole neighborhood is composed of buildings, but there is a very interesting area (the neighborhood of Calçada dos Mestres) overlooking the aqueduct of Águas Livres, where we find semi-detached villas with backyards.
Here they live young people, the elderly and families. There is the movement of those who go out in the morning and return at night, but also of those who here make life during the day: for a trip to the street grocery store, or even to amoreiras for another type of shopping. Most of the trade is concentrated in this center which was a few years ago the largest of the city.
The human configuration of the current Campolide results largely from the many people who were needed for the construction works of the monumental Águas Livres Aqueduct. Hence, since the 18th century two urban areas have been distinguished in the parish, one initially for the ‘masters’, with better conditions of residence, and another for the ‘workers’, improvised and sown tents.
The road and urban transformations of recent decades have significantly altered the condition of the latter, without, however, removing the character of the old site of Campolide, whose history and traditions deserve to be better known and revalued. And if the problems derived from the old social stratification have been somehow mitigated, their marks and memories persist in the daily and social reality of campolide’s community.
