Tavira is a city in the District of Faro, a region and sub-region of the Algarve with 606.97 km² of area.
Registered on the UNESCO Representative List as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in November 2010. It belongs to the cittaslow cities network.
The region where the city of Tavira is now located was once influenced by the various peoples who inhabited there, such as the Phoenicians, Liberes, Celts and Turks and later the Romans and Carhagians. The presence of the Romans in the Iberian Peninsula, and in particular in the Algarve, establishes Christianity at the end of the 3rd century, with the creation of the diocese of Faro (Ossonóba), and the appointment of the first bishop D. Vicentius.
The 5th century sees the new presence of peoples who invaded the Iberian Peninsula, such as the Suevos, Silingos, Alanos and the Visigoths. The latter dominated the Algarve region until the beginning of the 8th century.
With the ascending to the throne of Rodrigo, the last Visigoth king, some of the nobles did not accept that this was the rightful successor, thus initiating a civil war. These nobles, led by Count Julião, were supported by Muslims who would soon begin the invasion of the Peninsula. The following five centuries are of Arab rule, throughout the Algarve. It is from this period that the first document with the name of the city of Tavira is known, it comes from the Arabic “at-Tabira”; tabila spelling.

The coast of the municipality of Tavira has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve and Portugal, all of which are included in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. The sea can reach very pleasant temperatures during summer and early autumn, which can be around 26 °C in the warmer months. The beaches of the municipality are: Lacém Beach, Cabanas de Tavira Beach, Tavira Island Beach, Terra Narrow Beach, Barril Beach and Praia do Homem Nu.
Ria Formosa occupies the entire coast of the municipality, being separated from the sea by two dunar bars: cabanas island and Tavira Island. In addition to the barrier islands, the ria integrates a set of canals, salt pans and marshes.
The Serra de Santa Maria is the designation attributed to the Serra do Caldeirão in the municipality of Tavira; there are several rounded peaks above 500 meters of altitude. This entire low-lying mountain ouster barrier prevents the influence of cold winds from the north quadrant, and weakens the rainy fronts coming from the northwest, thus helping to define the climate of the Algarve coast. In addition, it constitutes a condensing barrier for moist air masses from the Gulf of Cadiz.
The municipality of Tavira has a large area of barrocal and mountain range, and its main productions are, in addition to fishing and aquaculture (area of ria Formosa, with the activity of producing fish preserves practically extinct), agriculture – with large extensions of and the exploitation of the resources of the saw (honey and cork, for example).
The tourist industry is located mainly on the coast, exploring the large expanses of beaches of the municipality, on The Island of Tavira and cabanas island. – REF: HT-AG091901
